The Signal Tower

The electromagnetic spectrum was declared public property and then systematically privatised. In the United States, the Federal Communications Commission — established 1934 — was created nominally to regulate broadcast in the public interest. In practice it became the architecture through which control of mass communication was consolidated into the hands of licensed broadcasters.

The tower is the physical monument to that consolidation. It marks territory. It declares: this signal originates here, travels in this direction, and reaches who we determine. The broadcast radius is not a neutral measurement — it is the drawn boundary of a permitted reality. Everything inside the radius receives. Nothing inside the radius replies.

The FCC licensing system ensured that the cost and regulatory complexity of broadcast ownership remained prohibitive for most. The spectrum was enclosed the way land was enclosed — through legal architecture rather than physical walls. The result was the same: a commons became private infrastructure, and those who operated it decided what travelled across it.

William Cooper documented the weaponisation of broadcast media across the Mystery Babylon radio series. The principle is precise: control of the electromagnetic spectrum is control of the consensus reality delivered to the population. The tower transmits one direction. The receiver has no reply channel. The population are passive recipients of a curated signal.

COINTELPRO — the FBI's Counter Intelligence Program, documented in the 1971 files release — included systematic infiltration of media organisations to ensure the signal remained managed. Journalists were compromised. Editors were cultivated. Stories were killed before transmission. The operation was not conducted at the tower. It was conducted at the source — in the editorial rooms, the production meetings, the licensing negotiations.

Herman and Chomsky's propaganda model, documented in Manufacturing Consent in 1988, identified five filters through which all broadcast content passed before reaching the public: ownership, advertising, sourcing, flak, and anti-communism ideology. The model does not require conspiracy — it functions through structural incentives. The tower broadcasts what survives the filters. Most reality does not survive the filters.

The crosshair grid on the garment is not decorative. It is the targeting infrastructure of the original system made visible. The signal was aimed. The audience was selected. The broadcast radius was a field of fire drawn around those deemed receivers.

The spectrum was never owned — it was enclosed. The difference is critical. Ownership implies a natural right. Enclosure is a historical act, reversible by a counter-act. The broadcast radius drawn around the tower was the managed boundary of permitted reality, not the actual limit of the frequency's reach.

The inversion: those who were only receivers become broadcasters. The circle is not a containing field — it is a radius of reach. The tower does not transmit downward. It transmits outward, in every direction, to anyone within range. The licensing regime was the enclosure. The underlying physics was always democratic.

The internet did not invent the counter-broadcast. It made the counter-broadcast scalable. Every node that transmits is a tower. Every archivist who speaks with an informed signal is operating outside the managed radius. The old infrastructure required towers, licenses, and capital. The new infrastructure requires only a signal and the willingness to transmit.

BROADCAST TERMINATED. This is not a threat. It is a description. The managed signal has ended its dominance. The new transmissions are not licensed. They are not filtered through the five-point propaganda model. They carry what the original system could not — unmanaged reality, transmitted in all directions simultaneously.

The tower rendered as a recovered surveillance schematic. The broadcast circle — the radius of the managed signal field — surrounds the structure. Crosshair grid lines extend beyond the circle: the targeting infrastructure of the original system, now visible to anyone who looks at it directly.

The redacted bar at the base carries the only necessary text: BROADCAST TERMINATED. The old signal has ended. Not the signal itself — the managed, filtered, one-directional broadcast that required a tower, a license, and a gatekeeper. That signal is terminated. What remains is the underlying frequency, which was never owned.

The garment itself is the new transmission. The person who wears this is no longer a passive receiver. They are an active node. The schematic on their chest is not nostalgia for the old infrastructure — it is documentation of what it was, worn by someone who has stepped outside the broadcast radius and begun transmitting on their own frequency.
